Becoming Prayer and Discernment Together

Every six years, our congregation gathers to listen, discern, and create together the path forward. As one of the youngest members of the Chapter, I was entrusted with the role of scrutineer. As the days of the Chapter unfolded, I realized that before my very eyes, prayer and discernment was coming into being. This reflection grows out of that experience.

Becoming Prayer and Discernment Together

Gathered in this moment
listening,
discerning,
sharing.

Remembering what has been.
Honoring what is.
Visioning what will be.

Morning awakens
Celebrating the Breaking of the Bread
voices from many places
reading,
singing,
praying.

Each day begins with purpose.
Values named and treasured.
Hopes and concerns
held gently in the light of faith speaking throughout the day.

And then we dive
into the unfolding of the day.

Tables of new faces.
Different voices.
Minds alert.
Hearts listening
for what rises
among us.

Breaks come alive
with laughter and wandering conversations
standing near tables,
sitting outside
among stones and flowers.

Then once more we gather
again and again through the day:
listening,
discerning,
sharing.

And slowly, quietly,
these repeated encounters
shape us.

Fifty-four women
becoming a discerning body
unique,
different,
diverse.

Risking trust.
Practicing respect.
Offering one another
generous regard.

These days of Chapter
seen for the first time
give this scrutineer
a rare moment in time

to see,
to feel,
to hear

what a discerning mind
and a praying heart
can become.

You have given such an exquisite account of your experience and a very beautiful insight into the recent Chapter for those of us who weren’t there. Thank you, Weeyaa!
