Daisy Flower Vase Painting

My childhood was full of white daisy flowers.

They return in memory in myriad ways. When I was a teenager, I used to herd cows near the streams and grass meadows. The beautiful tiny white flowers were all along the river side, and I fell in love with them. They gave me a feeling of calm and serenity. Sometimes I lay in the field, looking at the blue sky, listening to the sound of the stream, the rustling of leaves in the wind, and the sight of white flowers swaying in the sunlight. They were whispering to me:

“Let yourself dream big and rise up, be at peace and have courage to go forward”

Twenty-three years later, in Davao, Philippines, I was preparing for final vows. These were days of discernment for a new journey as an RNDM (Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions). My great retreat director Sr. Christina Cathro (an RNDM from New Zealand) who accompanied me for 30 days, once again connected my heart to daisies, and the childhood vision they had evoked. I noticed that whenever I went to the garden for prayers, I always sat on the big stone with white flowers all around. I sat on it and thought about my future journey and my childhood memories came back, I suddenly heard an inner voice:

“What is my heart really searching for? What is my passion? How does God want me to blossom and be fully alive?”

Now those little white flower-friends announce themselves again from my painting. They remind me:

“Take a challenge. Step forward and do what your heart yearns to do”

My name is Giang Pham, I belong to the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. I was born in a simple family farmer in a small countryside of Viet Nam. I was sent to Canada after my perpetual Vows on July 2019 and shared the international community life with RNDMs in Winnipeg, Saint Boniface Diocese.

I have loved art since I was a child. I used to draw my feelings on sand every time I was in happiness, sadness or even in troubles. Gradually, drawing and painting skills were formed in me. I enjoyed meditating on the beauty of creation and then expressed that in my paintings. I believe that God has a special purpose for each of us even when we are in the deep ocean of failure. We can always keep our dream. My dream is to be a brush in God’s hand, to express God’s beauty in creation and the feelings inside human hearts.

What a delightful way to begin my day- your meditation on daisies! I, too, love these little flowers (they comprised my wedding bouquet and we grow them in our garden) and your words echo the quiet joy of the flower itself. Your beautiful painting brings warmth to my (very cold, very snowy, very windy) day and to my heart. Thank you!!

Not only a beautiful painting, but a wonderful image of you sitting amidst your favourite flowers by a stream. Thank you for both pictures.

What a beautiful reflection, Giang.Your daisy painting is so strong and present in its simplicity. It reflects back to me something of your own strength of personality that has such a strong eye for beauty in all its wonder and delight. I too remember the big stone in Davao with white flowers all around. I think that big stone could tell a few secrets from so many of us who gathered there. Thank God those “white flower friends” announce themselves again in your art: creative, present, full of beauty and delight. You have a really great capacity to listen to your heart and express those feelings through your artistic eye – what a a wonderful gift.

Giang, as I try to wait — not so patiently — for spring here, reading your beautiful reflection and looking at your very cheerful painting of white daisies, I’m invited to look for beauty in the early spring landscape around me. Guess what? I found some tulip leaves bravely peaking out of the ground in my back yard! Thank you for the gentle encouragement I hear in your words.

Lovely, Giang. Thank you for listening to the “tiny white flowers” throughout your life and enabling them to “announce themselves” to us!
